VMS Library #2

The comprehensive art space design aims to go beyond merely providing a venue for artworks. It strives to create an environment that is conducive to artistic expression and exploration. The designer’s endeavor is to conceive a structure that not only accommodates a diverse array of artworks but also enhances their presentation and impact.
One of the key considerations in the design is the accommodation of sizable sculptures towering at a height of 6 meters. The space needs to have the structural capacity and appropriate spatial arrangement to showcase these magnificent artworks. Additionally, the design should be flexible enough to accommodate various types of artworks, including paintings on canvas and media Mapping installations. This requires careful planning of exhibition spaces, lighting, and technological infrastructure.
Regarding the architectural shell, the decision to envelop the building with transparent corrugations is deliberate and purposeful. This choice of material offers a unique advantage by allowing ample natural light to permeate the structure. The transparent nature of the corrugations creates a visual connection between the interior and exterior, blurring the boundaries and providing a seamless integration with the surrounding environment. Moreover, the material also acts as an effective filter, preventing excessive heat from entering the space and ensuring a comfortable environment for both visitors and artworks.
To further enhance thermal comfort, the architect has employed a strategic approach of perforating the floor surrounding the building. This innovative design feature establishes an air gap isolation system that acts as a barrier, impeding the intrusion of heat into the edifice. By carefully considering thermal dynamics, the design ensures a pleasant atmosphere within the art space, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the artistic experience.
The design of the building envelope goes beyond functional considerations and incorporates aesthetic elements as well. The contextual shadows cast upon the structure are taken into account during the design process. This attention to detail allows the building itself to assume the character of a monumental sculpture, blending harmoniously with the vibrant tapestry of Chiang Mai city. The interplay of light and shadow creates a visually captivating and dynamic experience for both visitors and passersby.
Upon completion, this architectural marvel is poised to become a true hub that transcends boundaries, connecting artists and artworks from across the globe. Its innovative design and thoughtful incorporation of various artistic needs will attract artists, curators, and art enthusiasts alike. The art space will serve as a catalyst, fostering a vibrant and inspiring environment that nurtures artistic collaboration and fuels innovation. It will be a place where creativity flourishes and where artists can showcase their works, exchange ideas, and push the boundaries of artistic expression.

In the guiding light of Professor Vimolsiddhi Horayangkura’s wisdom, advocating for change with the rhythm of time, a golden opportunity emerges. It invites us to craft something that resonates with modern society, a creation that embraces novelty without forcing the past into an unfamiliar context, only bending tradition when necessary.

Faced with the task of designing the library for Thammasat University’s Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, we recognize the diverse needs of students from various fields. Our goal is clear: to fashion a library that goes beyond being a mere repository of knowledge.

Drawing inspiration from the idea of “Cut your feet to match your shoes,” we navigate the challenge with grace. Our design envisions a learning sanctuary, a Creative Learning space with three layers of form – spaces, walls, and architectural details. Each layer intertwines to cater to the intricate demands of different learning styles.

Our sincere wish is for the library to transcend its conventional role. It should not only house books but also instill a love for learning in everyone who steps through its doors. Just as Professor Vimolsiddhi Horayangkura emphasized, an architect is a creator who turns abstract ideas into tangible realities, fostering innovation through integration.

In this endeavor, we aim to build more than a structure. We want to create an environment that breathes life into learning, nurturing the minds of students and inspiring future innovators. May this design not just be bricks and mortar but a living testament to the enduring human spirit’s pursuit of knowledge and creativity.
